Beyond the Palin cartoon # 33

  1. Love this! Won't it be refreshing to have someone real in the W.H.! And
    when
Michelle is asked leading questions about the girls and the reporter
obviously has an answer in mind, I always enjoy her honest, unexpected
    answers.
Q: Are the girls excited about all of this? (asked so enthusiastically)
    A: No, not really

This administration has been such a secret society. Who is Barack
    Obama? Are
you kidding me? Who is George W. Bush?
    Miss ya! Bonnie

  3. Sherri it's a play on the 3 AM phone call motif, but the joke is that black people often stay up late so they'd be awake at 3 AM. Too stereotypcal? KARYL

  4. After I wrote to you, I went back to see what my confusion was and realized
that the ‘red thing’ was a phone.....the inside ‘ring’ marks and the button beneath
it looked like an animal face to me......duh. Also, as it seemed ‘cruel’ to M and BO,
I thought I was missing the point. (Am I dumber than a 5th grader?)

  7. K: I have hunted, scrounged, searched, and dug, but I can't find my comment anywhere amongst all of you blog material.
When I do click comments all I get is application forms to fill out re blogs and blogging. Where am I going astray?
Don't worry about, "What will you do after the election?" Geezuz look around you at this time and place. What a friggin
(I left off the g since it has become politically Palin correct) mess we're living in. You know I think things are so bad that because of Bush II and his whole inept administration, if Sarah Paling (I added the g back) was the Democratic nominee running against McCain, she would win. Probably not with the overwhelming majority of votes that Obama will receive but enough to beat that old fart Bush III. Vote twice. John

  8. Since Obama is a Muslim and an Arab who pals around with terrorists, once he's in the White House, he won't have to answer The Phone. It won't ring because our enemies will love us and won't be our enemies anymore. Is that popcorn buttered?

  9. Karyl, I'm afraid this one bothers me. It seems racist and stereotyping to show the Obamas dancing to black music at 3 in the morning and not hearing the red phone ring.

  10. Thanks Trina,
I love the input. Quite a few cartoonists are saying there's not going to be anything to say that's funny if Barack gets elected and yet others say that it will free the funny up. With that in mind, I was thinking about the blacks I've known well (Richard Pryor for one) who stayed up LATE. That's what the stereotype was supposed to be about. As far as not answering the red phone - yeah it doesn't help our cause. Do you think I should take remove the cartoon? Can I copy your letter onto my site without your name?
    Karyl

  11. Personally, I would remove the cartoon, but that's me. And of course you can put my letter on your website, and you can use my name!

  12. Hi Karyl,
Sure, you can use my response, but I was so surprised that toon raised
racial sensitivities. I don't tell or like racial jokes, but I'm not
    color
blind either. When I see the Obama's, I see a black family and the
    part of
Barack's heritage that I see in his face is his father's side. But when
    I
saw the dance scene, I saw a couple celebrating and enjoying the
    personal
(not secret) part of their life. And Michelle as Barack's partner, to
    me,
represents the intellectual equal of this brilliant man. Probably
    making too
much of this, but if we are going to have a situation where pretty
open-minded "white people" (hate that designation--"white" translates
    into
"nothing" to me) are so worried about being perceived as prejudice that
    they
could look at that cartoon and see stereotypes, I can see a lot of
    walking
on eggs getting in the way of honest dialog. And if those responses
    came
from a variety of ethnicities, I guess it just means that the painful
journey into the 21st century has to include a continued recognition of
    our
history. And what better way to acknowledge our history and heal as a
    nation
than to go through this process of bringing qualified women and people
    of
color into leadership. That's what frustrates me about Palin! There are
    so
many smart and able women that could promote the cause of equality and
contribute to making things better-like Hillary. And who do we have
    running
for VP? Wow, what a set back and how insulting!
Good job as a cartoonist being provocative! That's what we need. It
    gets
honest dialog going. Sounds like a lot of self-examination could come
    out of
    this one!
    Whew! Bonnie

  13. K. Voila, I found myself in your blog comments. Mazel. However I will now try to put those comments in your comments box and see if you get them. Meantime I have been reading your fan mail right along, no problemo. The
Barrack/Michelle dancing in the dark toon was spot on. What the hell are your overly sensitive liberal readers
worried about? A black young lady I know looked at the toon and said, "Hey that's us. What's the beef?" Things will lighten up when the Obama family moves in. Are those kids adorable or what? There's a new world acoming.
    Vote three times. John

  14. Well, it was kind of . . . complicated.
There were like 1,000 40-ounce bottle tops in front of the red phone. And then there was the basketball jersey (which I recognize as the professional team from Barack’s home state, but others may just take as a stereotype…kind of like the like the 40-ounce bottles…). I liked the cigarette a lot (I’m a closet smoker, just like Barack!). Some may have seen it as a joint -- more folks probably smoke pot these days than cigs. And they’re fixin’ to have sex – let’s get it on nnnn -- at 3:00 am (I personally have no problem with this!!!). But there’s a crisis somewhere and Barack & Michelle are partying (whereas Hillary would have answered it on the first ring fully dressed in a pantsuit no less!).
I liked the plaid pants…a lot! Very un-Barack…and very funny!
Just accept the fact that when you reach the level of seriousness that your now vast following associates to you, that if you do something a little “edgy”, you’re going to get a response. Not necessarily a bad thing. As you know it means they’re interested, watching you, and care!!!

K- That was supposed to be popcorn.

K- Notice they were Kools - talk about at black stereotype!

K- They were only dancing, but Lets Get It On was the lyric in the song. Not that they weren't going to have sex... I was only trying to indicate that they were staying up late having a good time.

L- But there’s a crisis somewhere and Barack & Michelle are partying (whereas Hillary would have answered it on the first ring fully dressed in a pantsuit no less!).

K- Oh you know what Barack's pj bottoms look like?

  16. I personally thought it was funny, and I *totally* missed the Kools! I think beer before popcorn…that’s just me…

And FYI, Barack has pinstriped PJ’s!

They looked like they were having a great time…and totally thinking sex over red phone (maybe if it were the Bill & Hillary phone???)
